TREES ARE GOOD!
We as a tree service strive to preserve trees whenever we can. Trees filter carbon dioxide from the air and provide us with plenty of fresh oxygen to breathe. In addition, they are pleasing to the eye and provide homeowner’s with wind break in the Winter and shade in the Summer, conserving heating and cooling costs.
WHEN PRUNING TREES THERE ARE A FEW THINGS TO BE AWARE OF:
Any cut made on a live tree creates a wound that the tree will have to recover from. We as a tree service have to balance the tree’s needs with the needs of the client.
- As a general rule, a tree service never wants to remove more than 25% of a tree’s structure in one pruning. If more of a reduction is needed the tree should be pruned in phases (as with storm damaged trees).
- We as a tree service want to make proper pruning cuts at good branch unions, giving the limb an avenue to grow without producing sucker growth or permanently damaging the tree.
- We as a tree service want to make proper pruning cuts on the branch collar to assist the tree in compartmentalization (healing). Cutting behind the branch collar creates a wound that will not close over and would be detrimental to the tree eventually. Stubbing the limb off and cutting too far out on the branch will leave a stub that will promote sucker growth which is unhealthy for the tree as well as being unsightly. The stub will eventually die leaving an avenue for pathogens to enter the tree.
- Finally, we as a tree service never want to spike live trees. Any tree service that would spike your tree while pruning is uneducated to modern arborculture.
NEVER TOP YOUR TREES!
Topping is an outdated procedure in arborculture. Modern tree services do not top trees! Just as with pruning, it leaves a stubbed cut that will produce sucker growth, basically turning the tree into a high maintenance tree and will eventually kill the tree! Not to mention that it is unsightly!
